It is as the name says:

Scotch, is whiskey. There are quite a few differences between Scotch and Jack Daniels, but the essential ingredients are the same! Scotch, however can only be referred to by that name if it is produced in Scotland.

Scotch, is basically beer...malted barley is steeped in water until germination is reached. Then, the barley is then dried by smoking it. This is where the "smoky" flavor comes from when some people refer to the flavor of some Scotches they favor or know. Additionally, the flavor can be affected by adding peat to the fire. This will also affect the overall flavor, and you will hear Scotch lovers refer to the "peaty" flavor as well.

This elixir becomes Scotch once it is distilled and turned into the amber colored liquid we see in the bottles. "Single Malt" Scotch is like saying "single vineyard, wine". It is Scotch that is made from one batch and not blended with another. Many people prefer this style, and there are many flavors as well.

I have only begun to scratch the surface on the information in the scotch world. I have placed a couple of recent bottles in this issue that you may find interesting to try. If you have any comments or info to add, please send us an email: HWL email

Pick #1: Macallan, 18 yr old Scotch. Made from water from the river Spey, in Scotland.

This Scotch was a light wood color with a ginger/spice nose.

The palate was a spice/oak/smoke experience and the finish continued nicely in a full-body smoky ending.

Pick#2: Glenmorangie, 10 yr old Scotch, hails from Tain, Scotland

Glenmorangie 10 yr, has a wonderful amber color, and holds light smoke and spice on the nose.

The palate is smooth and satisfying, with flavors of oak, citrus, and smoke.

The 10 yr's finish is something very satisfying. A great malty flavor with a hint of smoke.
