The history of mead

A lot of us associate mead with some kind of old Viking or Barbarian movie. The truth is, that mead is very old. It is believed to have originated somewhere around 7000 B.C., and there is evidence of its existnence in many different corners of the world.

Mead is an alcoholic pre-cursor to beer. There are history programs that explain how early anglo-saxons built large halls called "mead halls" for their regular meetings, and it was generally THE place the lord and his men would drink and discuss important matters...

Mead is made by the fermentation of honey, water, and yeast. Over thousands of years, there have been many variations that include the addition of fruit or grains, and hops as well in order to make it a more bitter drink.

STYLES

Meads come in several different styles, and can have medium, sweet, dessert, or dry characteristics.

Mead can also be infused with all kinds of fruits and flavors from rhubarb to strawberry or melon. It is as diverse as a beer, but a different profile due to the main ingredient being the honey.

Nowadays, more meads tend to be served like a wine or cider, but appear to be more like a beer in its production.
