Bakery delights

Bakeries are always pleasant places to visit for me. The undeniable smell of baking bread will no doubtedly put someone in a good mood.

This month, we will take a brief look at some of our island bakeries to see what they offer and the differences in their style. If you have a favorite you'd like everyone to know about, please email us at: Hawaii Wine Lover

Liliha Bakery

Around since 1950, you have been living under a rock if you don't know this one. Probably best known for their "cocoa puffs" this bakery still has the old-fashioned counter style seating that we used to see in television shows.

From pancakes and sausage, to loco mocos and sandwiches, this place has it all. Aside from the grill, the bakery side produces butter-rolls, donuts, cakes, and other pastry delights.

Open 24 hrs. Except Monday, this place has been visited by everyone from grandmothers to policemen. The parking is not great, but worth the wait.

Great Harvest Bread Co.

(Merchant St. Location)

Each Great Harvest Bread Co. is a franchise. Separate owners are obvious in the way each bakery is run. While I have not visited every Great Harvest Co. bakery on Oahu, I have been to the Merchant St. location in downtown Honolulu.

There are always daily bread specials as well as scones, cookies, quick breads, and more. This location offers sandwich meals that are made to order. You may pick from the posted menu, or select specific condiments from their menu.

This location, while busy, has never struck me as uncomfortable. A few tables make it a good place for a quick downtown lunch or snack.

Fendu Boulangerie

pastry

A great bakery located in the Manoa Marketplace, this establishment bakes bread throughout the day instead of once in the early morning hours.

It is quite interesting to see the special oven they have through the window of the store. This bakery has not only sweet danish, cakes, and cookies, but also serves steak sandwiches and pizzas!

Definitely worth the trip into Manoa.
