If you're looking for a realxing experience on Sunday morning...visit the Haleiwa Farmer's Market. There, you will find a pleasant gathering of folks from all over, and many people who are there to display their wares and produce.
It is much different than the "farmer's markets" that infest the various parking lots around the island, and it definitely has a differet feel to it when there aren't cars waiting for you to move so the space can be utilized.
This market is "all green" and uses solar-power and employs a no-plastic zone as well as a Reduce-Reuse-Recycle method of operation. There are convenient areas to recycle everything from your leftovers to your napkins.
This assembly of people is actually sponsored by the Farm Bureau, and is located at the corner where Kam. Hwy. meets the bypass in Haleiwa. One of the most noticeable vendors is the "fried-green-tomatoes lady". She has a small truck set up at the market, and serves out regular dishes of fried, green tomatoes, and neopolitan pizza.
Some of the tasty tomatoes...
Neopolitan pizza by Jeanne Vana, of North Shore Farms.
Pesto, tomato, basil, and hand-stretched mozzarella! Delicious...
Haleiwa Farmer's Market had a polite crowd made up of both kamaaina and visitors.
During my visit, I observed many different products and services. From organically grown fruit and vegetables to bee-pollen popcorn and natural tea from Sudan, I was impressed with everything I saw. One main difference (except for K.C.C.) was that there was a comfortable, covered seating area. A nice reprieve from the heat of the north shore sun.
To ease me into the north shore mentality even more, there was a jammer on the guitar set up next to the tent. He had an impressive repetoire, and it was very relaxing.
From bob Marley to the Doors...
