JULY BEER PAGE

Calvin Shindo. Former Brewmaster for Mehana Brewing

There are many brewers in Hawaii. The man pictured above is one of the men that got me more involved in brewing as I learned about beer.

Over the past two years, I went from experimenting with this craft, to making it into an accessible activity for beer lovers of Hawaii. I realized that it's not nearly as easy as I thought it would be to make quality brew the way I wanted to.

Many batches and experiments later, I am still tweaking things every time I brew. I feel confident that the beer that I produce can put a smile on most people's faces, and I hope to bring that to many more people.

There are several recipes available for your brewing/drinking pleasure, and can be arranged in very little time for you. Take a look at the most popular, current recipes:

This beer is a great brew created using wheat instead of barley. The recipe was created by the old, southern Germans. It has a great, refreshing flavor, banana and clove scents, and wonderfully traditional cloudiness that the ancient Germans would be proud of!~$200 for 5 gallon barrel.

This recipe was passed to me by my brewing mentor, Nick. It has a special blend of grains added to the traditional stout recipe to make it a rich, smooth stout, worthy of any dark beer drinker. $200-5 gallon barrel.

I.P.A. stands for: India Pale Ale. It was created by the British for their voyages to India. Beer was a staple provision on British ships and they discovered that by the time they sailed from the motherland to India, their beer would be spoiled. This is when hops began being included into their beer. It would preserve the beer, and also give it a different flavor.

Most traditional I.P.A.'s are stronger flavored and hoppy. This one has a good balance, and still pleases with a formidable, strong flavor and aroma. $200-5 gallon barrel.
