What is I.P.A.?

Everyone has probably heard the term: “I.P.A.” when visiting a bar or hearing a commercial. But, what does it really mean?

The term stands for: India Pale Ale. This was started in eighteenth century when the English trading ships had to make the long voyage from home to India. Prior to the construction of the Suez canal, this trip was very long and extreme in temperatures and conditions. In order to have beer that wasn’t spoiled by the time they arrived, a brew was created that was high in alcohol and hops in order to preserve it. (Hops are used to balance sweetness and bitterness of the malt and other ingredients as well as add to the aromatics of the brew.)

IPA is a term that’s eaily thrown around nowadays, and a lot of times it is used incorrectly. A more traditional IPA will be slightly copper in color, as opposed to a lighter colored “Pale Ale”. It is also going to have a stout, bitter flavor because of the high hop content. The alcohol will probably be more formidable as well.

Here are some examples of great IPA’s

· Stone IPA-Stone Brewing Co. San Diego, Ca. This is one hoppy beer! Brewed by the same folks that make Arrogant Bastard, this beer is one that will have the hop lovers asking for more.

· 60 Minute IPA-Dogfish Head Brewing Co. There are 3 varieties of this beer, a 30, 60, and 90 minute IPA. It refers to the boil time of the wort in which hops are added. Very loved by beer connoisseurs.

· Longhammer IPA-Redhook Ale Brewery, Washington. This is the only beer on this list that’s actually available here in the islands. It has a good hoppy flavor, but is a little weak when it comes to consistency. Still better than any of the little yellow fizzys out there!

If you are interested in acquiring Stone or 60 minute, please contact me and I can help facilitate it.
