Each annum, on March 17th, most of the free world celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with a healthy supply of clovers and green beer. But, how much do you really know about St. Patrick’s Day? I have been celebrating it in one way or another since I was old enough to walk, but never really understood the holiday itself. It spurred me on to investigate a little, and being that it involves the enjoyment of alcohol, it was even more fun. The information I am passing on to you should make for some interesting conversation over green beers on St. Patty’s day.

Born in 387 A.D., St. Patrick was originally from Britain. He was enslaved by Irish raiders and did not return home for several years. St Patrick later returned to Ireland as an instrument of the Church and dedicated himself to missionary work there. A common legend of St. Patrick was that he “drove the snakes out of Ireland..” The entertaining part of this legend is that there were no snakes in Ireland!

An aberrant fact about the date of March 17th, is that the date actually commemorates the death of St. Patrick, rather than his birth. This is a common practice for saints, and is known as their, “Feast Day”, or the day that the Church would officially recognize their death from this world and birth into heaven. As you can see, this day was recognized as a significant religious holiday, but was officially recognized as a public holiday in 1903. Originally, there was a law that required all pubs to be closed on that day! This law was repealed in the 70’s, and it has morphed into the holiday that we knowingly celebrate. The actual purpose of celebration for this holiday appears to be ambiguous. Overall what is obvious is that millions of people are brought together in celebration by the impression that this saint left upon the world. That’s good enough for me.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day.
